Why it is worth considering

Dandan noodles (担担面) — thin noodles in a punchy sauce of sesame paste, chili oil, preserved greens, and minced pork seasoning — are one of Chengdu's signature street snacks. Recreating the sauce from scratch takes a dozen ingredients; the packaged kits from Chengdu brands like Baijia Akuan (白家阿宽) compress it into a few sachets.

For a visitor this is the lowest-effort way to bring a Chengdu flavor home: boil any thin noodles, toss with the kit, and you are most of the way there. Supermarkets stock them next to the instant noodles.

Before you buy, check

• Check the sachet lineup: a good kit includes separate chili-oil, sesame-paste, and preserved-vegetable/suancai sachets rather than one mystery powder.
• Look at the noodle type included if any — kits with thin wheat noodles match the original best.
