Should you buy it?

Good for

  • Gift buyers who want something light, flat, and clearly handmade
  • Textile and craft lovers

Not for

  • Bargain hunters expecting cheap prices — real hand embroidery is slow work and priced accordingly
  • Anyone who wants machine-perfect uniformity; slight irregularities are the signature of hand stitching

Why it is worth considering

Shu embroidery (蜀绣, also called Sichuan embroidery) is one of China's four famous embroidery traditions, known for delicate stitching, vivid color, and strikingly lifelike designs — pandas, flowers, and landscapes rendered thread by thread. It is a national intangible cultural heritage, and Chengdu is its home.

For visitors, the smart buys are small: silk handkerchiefs, scarves, and embroidered wallets are light, flat, and unmistakably handmade. Double-sided embroidery pieces — the same image visible on both sides — are collector-grade. Buy from museum shops or Kuanzhai Alley boutiques rather than street stalls for genuine handwork.

Before you buy, check

  • Ask whether a piece is hand-embroidered — look for slight irregularities in the stitching; perfectly uniform pieces are usually machine-made.
  • Check the back of the work: neat, clean reverse stitching signals quality handwork.
  • For scarves and handkerchiefs, feel the silk — it should be smooth and soft, not stiff or plasticky.
  • Double-sided pieces cost far more; confirm which side(s) are finished before paying.

Good to know

  • Keep embroidery dry and away from direct sun in your luggage — silk spots and fades.
  • Framed or large pieces are fragile and heavy; small accessories travel far better.
