Should you buy it?

Good for

  • Art lovers who want real folk art, not factory prints
  • Flat, light gifts with a great story attached

Not for

  • Minimalist decorators — these prints are gloriously loud, not subtle
  • Anyone who needs a frame included; most are sold as loose sheets

Why it is worth considering

Liangping woodblock New Year prints (梁平木版年画) have been carved and printed in northeast Chongqing for about 400 years, since the Ming dynasty. Listed as a national intangible heritage in 2006, they are bold, colorful folk art: door gods (门神) to guard the home, plus myths and opera stories, each color laid down from its own hand-carved block.

For travelers they are nearly perfect souvenirs — flat, light, genuinely handmade, and rich with meaning. Door-god pairs are the classic buy; mounted pieces cost more but arrive ready to hang.

Before you buy, check

  • Look for woodblock texture: hand-printed sheets show slight unevenness and the impression of the block; laser-sharp perfect prints are machine reproductions.
  • Classic motifs are door gods (《将帅图》, 《立刀顿斧》), myths (《老鼠嫁女》), and opera stories — ask the seller what a design means.
  • Choose loose sheets for packing light, or mounted/hinged pairs if you want them display-ready.
  • Selection is widest before Lunar New Year (December–January).

Good to know

  • Keep prints flat and dry — carry them in a rigid folder or between cardboard, never rolled in a damp bag.
  • Unframed sheets are the lightest option; framing is cheaper and easier back home.
