Erguotou Baijiu (二锅头)

Why it is worth considering

Erguotou is Beijing in a bottle: a clear, high-proof baijiu that the city's workers have drunk for generations. Niulanshan and Hongxing, the two historic makers, sell small bottles for the price of a coffee — which makes erguotou the rare souvenir that is both deeply local and nearly free to try.

It is not subtle — expect a strong, grain-forward spirit around 42–56% alcohol. Buy it for the story and the culture, not as a fine sipping whiskey.

Before you buy, check

• Stick to the classic brands — Niulanshan (牛栏山) and Hongxing (红星) are the two historic Beijing erguotou makers.
• Check the alcohol content on the label (commonly 42°–56°): higher proof is the traditional style; lower-proof versions are smoother for beginners.
• Buy sealed bottles from supermarkets or licensed shops — never from unmarked bottles at markets.
• Small 100–500ml bottles make better gifts than large ones; they are cheaper, lighter, and less risky if the recipient doesn't drink baijiu.

• Alcohol over 70% ABV cannot fly at all; standard erguotou (≤56°) must go in checked luggage within your airline's volume limits — check before you pack.
