Why it is worth considering

Chinese shadow play was born in Shaanxi — 'the world's shadow theatre comes from China, China's from Shaanxi, Shaanxi's from Huaxian.' Huaxian (Huazhou) shadow puppets are hand-carved from cowhide, painted in vivid colors, with up to two dozen movable joints, and were listed in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage in 2006.

You don't need to buy a full puppet. Modern cultural-product versions — framed single figures, bookmarks, ornaments — capture the dramatic graphic style in flat, packable formats. It is folk art with a great story: movies before movies, told in leather and lamplight.

Before you buy, check

• Choose flat pieces (framed shadow figures, bookmarks, ornaments) over large articulated puppets — they pack flat and cost far less.
• Look closely at the carving: real Huaxian-style pieces are hand-cut from cowhide with fine, even lines; printed copies look flat and uniform.
• Ask the seller whether the piece is handmade cowhide or a printed reproduction — price should reflect the difference.
• Check for cracks in thin parts (limbs, headdresses) before paying.
