Should you buy it?

Good for

  • An elegant, lightweight gift that suits almost any recipient
  • Shoppers who want something wearable rather than decorative

Not for

  • Anyone on a tight souvenir budget — real silk costs real money, and cheap 'silk' is polyester
  • Travelers who dislike bargaining; market prices are starting offers, not final prices

Why it is worth considering

A silk scarf is one of the few Chinese souvenirs that gets used rather than shelved — light to carry, easy to gift, and genuinely tied to China's silk heritage. Beijing's markets sell them by the hundred.

The entire game is authenticity: stalls mix real mulberry-silk scarves with polyester lookalikes at a tenth of the cost. Learn the touch-and-crease tests on this page, decide whether you want to bargain at a market or pay for certainty at a mall, and you will come home with something worth wearing.

Before you buy, check

  • Check the label for silk content: '100% silk' (真丝) or '100% mulberry silk' (桑蚕丝) is the real thing; 'silk-like' or polyester blends are not.
  • Feel the fabric: real silk is cool to the touch, drapes fluidly, and has a soft sheen — polyester feels slippery and plasticky.
  • Do the crease test: scrunch a corner in your fist for a few seconds; real silk springs back with few wrinkles, synthetics crease hard.
  • Compare a couple of stalls before buying — identical designs at wildly different prices are a sign to bargain.

Good to know

  • We have not verified current prices — real silk scarves and polyester imitations differ enormously in price; verify the material label.
  • Silk scarves are light and pack flat, but keep them away from sharp jewelry in your bag to avoid snags.
