Should you buy it?

Good for

  • History lovers who visited the Terracotta Army pits
  • An unmistakable, conversation-starting Xi'an gift
  • Travelers who want a compact, solid souvenir (no fragile thin parts on small pieces)

Not for

  • Anyone expecting an 'original' — every piece sold to tourists is a modern replica; there is no legal market in genuine artifacts
  • Travelers with no checked-baggage space — even small warriors are dense clay/resin and add weight
  • Buyers who want the cheapest option — the very cheapest street-stall copies are often crude and chip easily

Why it is worth considering

Nothing says Xi'an like a terracotta warrior. The originals — thousands of life-size clay soldiers guarding Emperor Qin Shi Huang's tomb — are one of archaeology's greatest finds, and small replicas are the most recognizable souvenir you can bring home from China.

The key decision is where you buy. The official museum gift shop at the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor sells licensed replicas with consistent quality, while street stalls near tourist sites sell unlicensed copies of wildly varying quality. A small, well-made replica (10–20 cm) is affordable, packable, and unmistakably Xi'an.

Before you buy, check

  • Buy at the official mausoleum museum gift shop or other licensed stores — look for official authorization marks; avoid anonymous street-stall copies if you care about detail quality.
  • Check the material: resin pieces are lighter and less fragile than clay; painted details should be crisp, not smudged.
  • Choose a size that fits your luggage — palm-size (under 15 cm) pieces travel best; life-size replicas are display pieces, not souvenirs.
  • Inspect joints and thin parts (spears, arms) for cracks before paying — these break first in transit.

Good to know

  • We have not verified current shelf prices — confirm at the counter before paying.
  • Clay replicas are heavy for their size; wrap in clothing inside checked baggage.
  • Never buy anything presented as a 'genuine' or 'excavated' artifact — that is either a lie or illegal.
